Rugby League
Central Newcastle
Established in 1910, Central Newcastle is one of the oldest Rugby clubs in Country Rugby League. The Butcher Boys have produced many fine players over the past 100 plus years, with their most famous Clive Churchill. In recent times, Central has produced a number of players to go on to NRL level, including Grant Anderson (Melbourne Storm), Kurt Donoghue (Dolphins) and Zac Hosking (Canberra Raiders).
2024 was a breakthrough season for the Butcher Boys, making the First Grade Grand Final for the first time since 1963. Central, however still has one of the longest First Grade Premiership droughts with 74 years.
